Few studies address the scientific evolution of firm heterogeneity in international trade. This article analyzes the transition between the model, the concept, the theory, and recent advances, using a systematic mapping methodology of 297 documents identified in Scopus. Current trends focus on diversification, multi-product firms, and location in the global economy. Among the conclusions, it is observed that firm heterogeneity remains a relevant model in international economics and an analytical tool in trade dynamics. It is suggested that new dialogues should focus on obtaining competitive advantages and adapting to environmental changes.
