Limitações do comércio ético: um estudo de caso do mercado de abacate na América do Norte

Resumo

O mercado global do abacate proliferou devido ao aumento da demanda, especialmente na América do Norte. No entanto, esse aumento no comércio de abacates levou a importantes preocupações ambientais, particularmente a perda de habitat. A agricultura de abacate em grande escala está associada à desmatamento e à interrupção de ecossistemas, resultando na degradação de habitats naturais. Esses problemas são mais evidentes em regiões onde a produção de abacate está concentrada, como o México, o principal exportador para a América do Norte. Ecossistemas críticos, como o da floresta de Oyamel, lar da borboleta Monarca em sua fase de hibernação, estão sendo negativamente alterados para atender à demanda. À medida que o comércio de abacates continua a se expandir, as práticas de comércio ético surgiram como um meio vital para equilibrar os benefícios econômicos com métodos de agricultura sustentável. Essa abordagem é crucial para mitigar danos ambientais adicionais e preservar a biodiversidade. No entanto, é essencial analisar criticamente as limitações do comércio ético, particularmente no que diz respeito aos padrões que regem sua implementação.
